OVERVIEW

Consumer products company OXO, a long-time Bally Design client, sought to expland it’s line of cooking tools with a product designed specifically for parboiling and blanching.

THE CHALLENGE

No real specialty tools existed for these processes that require the quick and easy transfer of food in and out of boiling water. Additionally, OXO wanted the product to appeal to both the “foodie” cooking enthusiast and the home cook, as well as use the smallest possible footprint in a crowded kitchen drawer or cabinet.

OUTCOME

After interviewing pro chefs and home cooks, Bally Design’s team took the traditional hanging basket form and updated it with a unique pop-open silicone basket. The concern for safety and comfort was met with a long rubberized handle that keeps hands away from heat. When collapsed, the low-profile colander also allows for compact storage in cramped quarters.

The introduction of the product at the annual Housewares Show was so successful, that not only did buyers place large orders, but they also requested other colors and additional sizes.? Bally Design won the Bronze Award in 2008 IDEA International Design Excellence Awards for its design of the OXO Good Grips Silicone Cooking Colander. The award, presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America, honored product design and innovation worldwide.
